On Friday, September 26, we welcome Dr. Anita Say Chan, Professor of Information Sciences and Media at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and founder of the Community Data Clinic. Her keynote, “Predatory Data,” will explore the troubling historical lineage connecting 19th-century eugenics and anti-immigration movements to modern-day algorithmic discrimination and techno-surveillance. Drawing from her groundbreaking book, Dr. Chan offers a powerful call to challenge the structural harms embedded in Big Tech’s data systems, and to build alternative futures rooted in feminist, decolonial, and justice-based data practices.
