Well Hello There!

BSides is a volunteer-run, community-supported organization. Everyone that volunteers or are staff for BSides Bloomington, even the Board Members, are unpaid volunteers. That's the wonder of our community, we're here because we want to be, not because we're getting paid.

We welcome anyone, from any background and experience level, to volunteer on any level.

If you'd like to donate your time and talents, we'd like to have you! There are a variety of ways you can volunteer:

Become an organizer

Being an Organizer is the most time-consuming volunteer role available. This involves at least a one-year commitment that includes but is not limited to: weekly meetings, organizing work outside of meetings, deadlines, conference set-up and tear-down, and long hours. Organizers are expected to be able to communicate professionally and reliably, be proactive, and have the desire to help BSides Bloomington be successful.

Become a Staff member

If the time commitment of an Organizer is not a good fit, but you'd like to contribute more than an average volunteer, consider becoming a Staff Member. Staff members are individuals that have a specific talent or skill they would like to offer, typically in support of a specific Organizer.

Become a village host

"Villages" are themed activity areas for Conference participants to visit at their leisure during the conference. A Village Host is responsible for bringing the materials, monitoring the table/area, and being available to assist participants with the activity.

This role is generally a one-year commitment that includes but is not limited to: monthly meetings, organizing work outside of meetings, communicating with the Organizers promptly, village set-up and tear-down, and long hours.

become a volunteer

Not the long-term commitment type? That's okay, we still want you. Volunteers can volunteer for one or more days of the conference. The volunteer work can include but is not limited to: set-up, tear-down, security, village assistance, and a variety of other tasks required to keep the conference running.

Some volunteer categories are:

  • Security - protect various room/doors, work the Friday night party, respond to incidents, help with radio check in / out, etc. (No, you don't have to look like a club bouncer to volunteer.)
  • A/V - help with set up / tear down, assist with running recording rigs, help with troubleshooting A/V issues
  • NOC / Networking - help with set up / tear down, run networking equipment, help with troubleshooting network issues
  • Media - help with social media posts, work with gaining / maintaining news outlets (i.e. newspapers/journals, radio stations, local community outreach, etc.)
  • Web Admin - assist with website updates / maintenance
  • Sponsors - refresh stale contacts, reach out to potential sponsors, tend to sponsor booths during conference, maintain sponsor relationship between conferences
  • Ticketing / Merchandising - assist with ticket sales, drink ticket distribution for / during party, assist with online merchandise sales, stuff attendee bags prior to conference
  • Speaker Support - tend to speaker needs in Green Room/on stage
  • Kid Village - supervise the Kid Village, have fun teach kids
  • Art / Design - assist with artistic/design needs
